Vata in Motion: How to Survive Autumn in Balance According to Ayurveda

With the autumnal equinox comes a time when nature begins to withdraw into itself. The leaves fall, the days shorten, and the air feels cold, dry, and windy. It is during this period that dosha begins to dominate in Ayurveda. Vata, made up of the elements of air and ether. Its energy is light, mobile, changeable, and cooling. When out of balance, it brings restlessness, dryness, fatigue, digestive problems, and emotional instability into our lives.
When Vata manifests itself in practice
In my practice, I meet clients whose problems get significantly worse in the fall. For example, Jana (39), a marketing manager, came to the conclusion that her sleep had worsened, she woke up tired in the morning, her limbs were cold, and her digestion was not working as well as before – even ordinary soup made her feel bloated. Petr (46), an IT specialist, also faced similar problems, who experiences a regular return of anxiety, dry skin, and back pain in the fall. Both cases are typical manifestations of a disordered Vata.
Three key pillars of Ayurvedic care
Autumn is naturally a time of decline and internal slowing. In Ayurveda, we say that this is a time when we should cultivate stability, warmth and regularity. These qualities help to calm the Vata dosha . It is not about radical changes, but about conscious adjustments in daily routine, nutrition and attitude towards oneself.

- Regularity and routine: Try to eat, sleep and work in a regular rhythm. It is ideal to get up around six and go to bed by ten at night. Treat yourself to at least a short routine every day, such as a self-massage with warm sesame oil, breathing exercises or gentle yoga.
- Warming food: Forget raw salads, smoothies or cold breakfasts. Autumn calls for thick, warm and cooked foods such as soups, stews, ghee and cereals. Use spices like ginger, cinnamon, fennel or cumin, which support digestion and provide warmth.
- Deep body and mind harmonization: Ayurvedic oil therapies are ideal first aid for Vata imbalances. Among the most effective are abhyanga, a full-body oil massage, and shirodhara, in which a stream of warm oil is gently poured onto the forehead. Both therapies harmonize the nervous system and bring about deep relaxation.
